Train traffic safety
As the Bilbao Metro has only existed for a short period of time, it is
one of the best equipped in the world. It has been equipped with advanced
safety systems.
The Bilbao Metro features a global safety system on its entire network
known as ATP (Automatic Train Protection), as well as an Automatic Operation
system known as ATO.
Purpose of the ATP (Automatic Train Protection) system:
- Guarantee safety by keeping an appropriate distance between trains.
- Continuous supervision of the speed of the train, warning the driver
when he must use the brakes or applying them automatically to keep the
train below a certain speed.
Purpose of the ATO (Automatic Train Operation):
- Automatically drives the train between stations, stopping it at the
desired position at each platform.
- It drives the train under the ATP system.
