Metro Bilbao has assessed the risks that may arise throughout the system:
Consequently, a General Emergency Plan has been drawn up, which analyses all emergency situations and how they can be solved.
A series of Metro Bilbao installations which respond to these emergency situations are to be found below:
Each station includes a fire detection system.
All underground areas have two evacuation routes.
Throughout the entire underground area, there is an emergency water deposit for emergency situations.
In addition to the emergency water deposit, all underground stations have four fire hose reels/hydrants which are connected to the mains water supply.
There are two ventilation systems; one permanent and the other for emergency situations. The permanent system is located under the platforms. The emergency system, in the event of fire, enables evacuation through smoke-free fire escapes at a controlled temperature.
Each station on a section has two pumps.
Three hydraulic flood-gates protect the underground stations beneath the river at Arenal and Olabeaga.
